Rabbi Lawrence R. Sernovitz

 

 

Rabbi Lawrence R. Sernovitz joined Temple Emanuel in July of 2013. Prior to being a part of the Temple Emanuel family, he served Old York Road Temple-Beth Am in Abington, Pennsylvania. He earned an M.A.H.L and rabbinic ordination from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City.

 

Rabbi Larry Sernovitz has been focused on areas in his rabbinate that include education, interfaith matters, prayer and spirituality, social action and social justice. He is a member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and sits on the Committee on Disability Awareness and Inclusion; Rabbi Larry Sernovitz is a member of the Rabbinic Leadership Council of ARZA (Association of Reform Zionists of America) and represents them as a member of the board of the American Zionist Movement. He is involved with Camden Churches Organized for People and is a member of their Camden County Clergy Caucus. While he was in Abington, he was a member of the Abington Interfaith Ministerium, was a board member of CAPT (Citizens and Police Together) in Abington Township, and served as Vice-Chair of the Montgomery County Advisory Council of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission and received its Trailblazer Award in 2013 at the annual Civil Rights Luncheon in 2013. Rabbi Sernovitz also serves on the Board of Directors of the Dysautonomia Foundation, which supports the work of the Dysautonomia Center at NYU Medical Center.

 

Rabbi Sernovitz received his B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh and his Masters in Elementary Education from Temple University.. While at HUC-JIR, he was the proud recipient of the Rabbi Edwin N. Soslow Prize in Jewish History. Prior to rabbinical school, he taught fourth grade in the Cheltenham School District, located in the Northern Suburbs of Philadelphia.

 

Rabbi Larry Sernovitz is married to Rebecca and is the proud father of Sam (4) and Daniella (15 months).
